Indian Premier League franchise Rajasthan Royals are reportedly keen on appointing Gautam Gambhir as their mentor, CEO, and partner. The inaugural IPL champions are currently undergoing a change in ownership and have already ushered in a new phase by naming Riyan Parag as captain.
As per a report by Dainik Jagran, one of the incoming owners has approached Gambhir with a long-term proposal outlining the franchise’s future plans. The Royals have also revamped their support staff after Rahul Dravid’s comeback stint lasted just one season, which ended with a disappointing ninth-place finish.
The franchise has since brought Kumar Sangakkara back into the fold, while the coaching unit now includes Vikram Rathour, Shane Bond, and Trevor Penney. It is important to note that Gautam Gambhir cannot take up the offer from Rajasthan Royals while he remains in charge of the Indian men’s team.
He is contracted with the Board of Control for Cricket in India until the conclusion of the 2027 ODI World Cup, having officially succeeded Rahul Dravid as head coach in 2024.
“According to the Supreme Court decision following the Lodha Committee’s recommendations, no person can be a partner, CEO, and mentor of an IPL franchise while being the Indian coach. This would be considered a conflict of interest,” the report mentions.
Gautam Gambhir Aims To Lead Team India To Gold At LA Olympics 2028
Rajasthan Royals’ proposal to bring in Gautam Gambhir reportedly extends beyond the current term of his contract with the Board of Control for Cricket in India, as the head coach is keen on continuing in his role to lead Team India at the historic 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
With cricket set to return to the Olympic Games for the first time since 1900, Gambhir has a unique opportunity to be part of a landmark moment in the sport’s history. The 2027 ODI World Cup is in late 2027, followed by the LA Olympics in July 2028. Coaching deals are fixed-term, but short extensions are possible.
For example, Rahul Dravid’s tenure officially concluded after the 2023 ODI World Cup, but he agreed to a six-month extension with an eye on the 2024 T20 World Cup, reportedly at the request of then-captain Rohit Sharma.
