Gautam Gambhir Returns India From Australia Due To Personal Emergency

India head coach Gautam Gambhir reflected on his return to his hometown, New Delhi, ahead of the side’s T20 World Cup 2026 group-stage fixture against Namibia. The match is set to be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Thursday, February 12.

Gambhir shares a deep association with Delhi, having represented the state throughout his domestic career, captained the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in the IPL, and registered his highest Test score at the venue.

Ahead of the contest, the head coach hosted the players and support staff for dinner at his residence, making the most of his time in familiar surroundings before the team departs for Sri Lanka. India’s next group-stage encounter, against Pakistan, is slated to take place in Colombo on Sunday, February 15.

Gambhir Opens Up On Lonely Nights And Pressures Of The Job

Gautam Gambhir spoke about the challenges of frequent travel and the pressure to constantly deliver results.

“Home is love, home is where your family is, and obviously, home is where you get peace as well. For me, home has always been really special. Obviously, it’s tough because you go through a lot of lonely nights as well, you go through a lot of nights where things don’t go your way.”

“It is sometimes a very challenging profession as well, so when you have got your trusted support staff, they become as close as your family, because you can share a lot of emotions with them,” Gautam Gambhir said in a video released by the BCCI.

“In fact, when you are in this profession, you share a lot more emotion with them as compared to what you share with your family. They know the ups and downs of this profession, they know how it feels when things don’t go your way,” he added.

After succeeding Rahul Dravid as head coach in 2024, Gambhir personally selected the majority of the support staff. He shares a strong working relationship with assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate and bowling coach Morne Morkel, having previously collaborated with both during his IPL tenure.
