Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir was clearly unhappy as all-rounder Washington Sundar was dismissed for just one run off eight balls in the second ODI against South Africa in Raipur on Wednesday, December 3. Sundar’s exit came in an unfortunate run-out following a mix-up with captain KL Rahul in the 41st over of India’s innings.
After a difficult outing at No.5 in the series opener at Ranchi, Sundar was promoted to No.6 following Virat Kohli’s dismissal during the death overs. His struggles continued, taking six balls just to get off the mark. Facing Aiden Markram, whose delivery turned away from him, Sundar tried an unorthodox reverse-sweep to unsettle the bowler.
However, he failed to make proper contact, and the shot went straight to Corbin Bosch at short third man. Despite this, Sundar immediately ran for a quick single, but KL Rahul, positioned at the non-striker’s end with a clear view of the play, did not move, leading to Sundar’s run-out.
The youngster, however, hesitated just a fraction too long before realizing that KL Rahul was not on the same page. As he spun around and attempted a desperate dive to make the crease, wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock had already removed the bails.
The square leg umpire immediately gave him out without consulting the third umpire. KL Rahul looked stunned by the Tamil Nadu player’s poor judgment, his frustration evident. Meanwhile, head coach Gautam Gambhir also showed his displeasure in the dressing room, shaking his head in visible frustration.

Rahul and Jadeja Take Charge Following Sundar’s Dismissal In 2nd ODI vs South Africa
India’s innings slipped to 289-5 in the 41st over following Washington Sundar’s dismissal. With Virat Kohli already back in the pavilion, the team was seeking some stability before accelerating, but the run-out put them under pressure.
Yet, the seasoned duo of KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja once again steadied the ship, just as they had in the first ODI, guiding India through the third powerplay. At the time of reporting, the stand-in captain had notched his second successive fifty, with the score at 336-5 after 48 overs.
