Star Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from One Day Internationals to concentrate on T20 cricket, with an eye on the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. His final ODI appearance came during the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, where Australia exited in the semi-finals.
Maxwell finishes his 50-over career with 149 matches under his belt, amassing 3,990 runs at an average of 33.81, which includes four centuries and 23 half-centuries. With the ball, the off-spinner contributed significantly as well, claiming 77 wickets, including four instances of taking four wickets in a match.
Maxwell Bows Out of ODIs, Cites 2027 World Cup Exit and Focus on T20 Future
The 36-year-old cited the need to manage his workload and focus on T20 competitions, including the Big Bash League and various international leagues. Explaining his decision, Glenn Maxwell revealed he had a conversation with George Bailey, Australia’s Chairman of Selectors, during which he admitted he wouldn’t be able to push through until the 2027 ODI World Cup.
“I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how body was reacting to the conditions. I had a good chat with (Chair of Selectors) George Bailey and I asked him what his thoughts were going forward. We talked about the 2027 World Cup and I said to him ‘I don’t think I am going to make that, it’s time to start planning for people in my position to have a crack at it and make the position their own’,” Maxwell told the Final Word Podcast.
“Hopefully they get enough of a lead-in to hang onto that role. I always said I wasn’t going to hand my position over if I felt like I was still good enough to play. I didn’t want to just hold on for a couple of series and almost play for selfish reasons. They are moving in such a clear direction so this give them the best look at what the line-up is leading into that next World Cup. I know how important that planning is,” he added.
