“He Had The Opportunity Today” – Virender Sehwag Feels Shubman Gill Should Have Scored 200 In Second ODI Against Australia

Former cricketer Virender Sehwag feels Shubman Gill should have gotten a daddy hundred in the second ODI against Australia on Sunday, September 24 at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. The Indian opener slammed a blistering century in the match to power India to a comfortable win. The hosts now have an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the three-match series.

Shubman Gill has been in terrific form this year in International cricket. He is the leading run-scorer for India in ODIs this year. Continuing the exceptional performance, the youngster slammed his sixth century in the format during the second ODI. His partnership with Shreyas Iyer laid a solid platform for India to get a huge score.

However, Virender Sehwag was disappointed as Shubman Gill failed to convert his century into a daddy hundred. Gill scored 104 runs off 97 deliveries with six boundaries and four sixes. He looked a bit tired at the crease following his century. Talking about the youngster’s knock, Sehwag said on Cricbuzz,

“He missed out last time but ensured that he got his hundred today, but I would still say that in the form he is in he should have scored 160 or 180. He is now just 25. Had he scored 200 today then he wouldn’t have become tired and could have fielded as well. At 30, he would have found it difficult because he wouldn’t have recovered. So it is better to score big runs now.”

When you are in form, don’t throw your wicket away – Virender Sehwag

Former cricketer Virender Sehwag further advised Shubman Gill that a batter should capitalise when in good form to make huge scores. He added that Gill had the opportunity in the second ODI to score a double-century, had he stayed at the crease for long. Virender Sehwag said,

“When you are in form and you are scoring runs, then don’t throw your wicket away. When he got out, there were 18 overs still remaining. Had he played for 9-10 overs more, he could have completed his second double-hundred. Rohit Sharma scored three double-hundreds. He had the opportunity today. A 200 has been scored at this venue by a player named Sehwag because it is that sort of a track.”

Shubman Gill has had a great run in ODI cricket so far. In 35 matches, he has scored 1917 runs at an average of 66.1, and a strike rate of 102.84. He has scored six centuries and nine fifties in the format. He is also the leading run-scorer in the ongoing series against Australia with 178 runs in two matches.
