India’s 30-run defeat to South Africa in the Kolkata Test has sparked new debates over the team’s planning, pitch choices, and selection decisions. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has openly advised head coach Gautam Gambhir to reconsider the current approach and strongly hinted at bringing Mohammed Shami back into the Test setup. According to Ganguly, the team needs a healthier balance between seamers and spinners, along with better-quality pitches that encourage competitive cricket instead of overly spin-dominant tracks.

He also pointed out that Shami’s consistent domestic performances make his absence even more puzzling. Ganguly reminded everyone that Shami last played a Test during the 2023 World Test Championship. Since then, the fast bowler has delivered impressive numbers, claiming 17 wickets in four domestic matches at an average of 17.35. To Ganguly, these figures clearly show Shami’s readiness to return to the highest level and strengthen India’s pace attack.

Call For Stronger Pace Attack And Better Surfaces

Speaking to Sports Tak, Ganguly stated, “I am very fond of Gautam; he has done well in big tournaments. But he needs to pick good pitches in India and trust bowlers like Bumrah, Siraj, and Shami.” By naming Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj alongside Shami, he made it evident that he favours a proven and experienced fast-bowling lineup capable of performing on more balanced surfaces.

Sourav Ganguly also raised concerns regarding India’s frequent reliance on turning tracks, expressing that the team has been involved in too many “pitch-affected” matches. He urged the management to return to fair, true pitches that allow for longer contests and encourage both batters and bowlers to showcase skill. According to him, India must prioritise high first-innings totals if they hope to dominate Test matches consistently. “Play on good wickets. I hope Gautam is listening. If the batters don’t score 350-400, we won’t win Tests,” he cautioned.

Need For A Five-Day Test Mindset

Highlighting the importance of endurance and methodical play, Ganguly added that India should aim to win matches through sustained performances over five days, rather than banking on quick results assisted by turning tracks. He referenced England’s recent Test success, noting that their batters have excelled by putting up large totals on true, challenging surfaces.

With the next Test scheduled in Guwahati on November 22, Ganguly’s remarks add pressure on the selectors and team management. His suggestions may lead to fresh discussions around team composition, pitch preparation, and overall long-term strategy as India looks to recover from the opening-match setback.
