“I Can’t Understand The Criticism” – Former RCB Seamer Defends Shubman Gill After AUS vs IND 4th T20I

Former India pacer Varun Aaron criticized those questioning Shubman Gill’s place in the T20I squad following his resilient performance in the fourth T20I against Australia at Carrara Oval, Gold Coast, on Thursday, November 6. The opener top-scored with 46 runs from 39 balls, helping India register a 48-run victory and take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

Gill faced a tough challenge at the top of the order on a tricky pitch with large square boundaries. After a solid start in the powerplay alongside Abhishek Sharma, he steadied the innings, anchoring one end until his dismissal in the 15th over. Following his exit, India suffered a dramatic collapse, adding just 43 runs in the final six overs while losing six wickets.

Critics had questioned Gill’s intent, particularly around the halfway mark when his strike rate was 117.95. With a few underwhelming performances earlier in the series and key players like Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal unavailable, the opener was under immense pressure heading into the penultimate match of the series.

“You Can Always Rely On Shubman Gill In Tough Conditions”- Varun Aaron

Varun Aaron, however, backed the opener’s strategy, citing the challenging conditions on the field.

“The thing with Shubman Gill is that when conditions don’t favour batting, you can always put your money on Shubman Gill because of his technique, because of his poise, and because of his game awareness. He knows exactly what wicket offers, what kind of stroke play, and he plays according to that. So you need somebody like him in the T20 setup,” Varun Aaron said on said on Star Sports (via India Today).

“When people raise questions about Shubman Gill being in the T20 setup, it never makes sense to me because this is what he gives you when everybody else fails on a wicket that is slightly difficult compared to the other wickets in this whole series. He gives you a 46, which is worth its weight in gold,” he added.
