Indian star batsman Shubman Gill shared that the Men in Blue’s 2011 World Cup victory served as his motivation to aspire to win the trophy himself one day. Gill was a mere 12 years old when MS Dhoni and his team brought an end to India’s 28-year World Cup wait.

The young cricketer vividly remembers the emotions he experienced during that unforgettable triumph. During an interview with Star Sports, Shubman Gill shared his thoughts on the 2011 World Cup victory, saying:

“When India won the World Cup in 2011, I was just 10-12 years old and it was an unreal scenario. That was the time when I felt that I too wanted to lift that trophy at least once in my lifetime. Representing India in the World Cup is always a dream for any child and it was my dream as well growing up.”

Suresh Raina thinks Shubman Gill aspires to become the next Virat Kohli

“He’ll be one of the most important players at the World Cup. I know that he wants to be a superstar and wants to be the next Virat Kohli and is in that aura already and after this World Cup, we will be talking about him more often,” said Raina on JioCinema.

“The form he’s playing in with his hand speed – it’s extremely strong. Spinners don’t know where to bowl to him and if fast bowlers don’t swing the ball, he can play those really well with a straight or a flick. His mindset will not stop here.”

“What Rohit Sharma did in the 2019 World Cup; Gill could do the same for India this year. He’ll get 50 overs to bat, so it’s a takeoff point for his batting. I think he’s a born leader and he shows that in his game,” he added.

Shubman Gill’s perspective on individual goals

Gill has maintained remarkable consistency in his ODI career to date, and he recently emerged as the leading run-scorer with 302 runs in the Asia Cup 2023. He consistently strives to set higher standards for himself and is committed to giving his best for the team.

On this, he stated: “The journey so far has been nothing short of a dream, a fairytale. As you keep on doing better, your expectations from yourself keep on increasing and I want to give my maximum effort at any stage in the tournament wherever I get the opportunity.”

Shubman Gill earned considerable praise for his courageous century against Bangladesh, where he single-handedly kept India in the game. India is optimistic that Gill’s exceptional form in ODIs persists against Australia, leading up to the crucial World Cup next month.
