“I Was Abused For Not Waking Up Early”- Dinesh Karthik

Dinesh Karthik-Rishabh Pant

The ICC World Test Championship final between India and New Zealand at Southampton lost two days due to heavy rains. The other days also witnessed frequent rain interruptions. Dinesh Karthik, who was with the English commentary team, was a “Weatherman” for the fans on social media.

The wicket-keeper batsman reveals that he was abused for saying “it’s raining” and also for “not waking up early” on social media.

“‘Weatherman’ is a very double-edged sword; I’ll put it on record. The first day, a lot of praise, the second day, very happy, the third day they started abusing me. I wanted to sleep yaar; I can’t wake up every day at 6’o clock to give a weather report.” Karthik said on the ’22 yarns with Gaurav Kapur’ podcast.

He added that the fans starting abusing him for not waking up early.

“They took it too seriously on social media. They started abusing me saying, ‘Wake up! What the hell are you doing?’ in far more choice words that I can’t use on the podcast, just for not waking up, which was hard but you have to live up to their expectations I guess. I got abused for saying it was raining!”.

He added, “I was like, what is this, the weatherman will only tell you what is happening. I can’t make it up so that you are happy! But ya, I guess it goes as a part of the territory. Two things I got abused for were for saying it’s gray and it’s raining and the fact that I couldn’t wake up early to give the news. And a lot of it, I am talking about thousands of abuses. Not one or two, that I would have let go. Thousands saying ‘Wake up, wake the hell up.”

“Got It Wrong”: Dinesh Karthik Apologises For Sexist Comment

Recently, Karthik received a lot of flak for his sexist comment. During the second ODI between Sri Lanka and England, Karthik had made comparisons between cricket bats and “neighbor’s wife”.

“Batsmen and not liking bats, they go hand in hand. Most of the batters don’t seem to like their bats. They either like another person’s bat. Bats are like a neighbor’s wife. They always feel better,” he had said.

Karthik apologized for his comment saying, “I want to apologize for what happened last game. It’s not really what I intended. I just got it all wrong. I apologize to everybody. It’s definitely not the right thing to say. I am really sorry that it shouldn’t happen again. I got a lot of stick from my wife and my mum for saying that.”
