Virat Kohli Shardul Thakur

Team India all-rounder Shardul Thakur was rewarded for his brilliant catch during the ICC ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 match against Afghanistan on Wednesday, October 11 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. He won the best fielder medal in the Indian dressing room, following the team’s emphatic win, securing their second of the tournament.

Shardul Thakur took a great catch to dismiss Rahmanullah Gurbaz during the thirteenth over of the Afghanistan innings. Hardik Pandya bowled a short delivery to Gurbaz who went for the pull shot. However, the ball took the top edge and flew to Shardul Thakur. The all-rounder, at backward square leg boundary, caught the ball on the first attempt. However, he flicked the ball in as he was going over the line. He caught in again on the second attempt to send Gurbaz back to the hut.

Shardul won the Best Fielder award in the Indian dressing room for this effort. He was presented the medal by Virat Kohli, who won it in the opening match. India’s fielding coach T Dilip highlighted everyone’s fielding performance during the match, before naming Shardul as the best fielder.

Very happy to convert the catch: Shardul Thakur

Team India all-rounder Shardul Thakur opened up on the Rahmanullah Gurbaz dismissal. He expressed that the catch came at a crucial juncture in the match. Gurbaz was looking in good touch, slamming three boundaries and a six. Shardul further also spoke about the team atmosphere, where everyone has gelled in well. He said,

“The catch was at a crucial period because Hardik took a chance bowling a bouncer and we needed a wicket at that stage. Very happy to convert the catch.”

“I have been part of this team for a few years now and I know the boys really well. I am comfortable in this dressing room and we have created an atmosphere where there are no such things as seniors and juniors. Everyone has gelled in so well that you don’t feel nervous here,” he added.
