Despite Kohli’s initial contribution of 54 and K.L Rahul’s 66, India faced a formidable challenge from Australian bowlers Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Pat Cummins. The trio wreaked havoc, limiting India to a total of 240 runs in the final. Rohit Sharma’s aggressive start provided a promising beginning for India, but Australia fought back with consistent wicket-taking to place the hosts on the defensive.
Kohli, a standout performer, achieved the distinction of being the first Indian to score over 50 runs in both the semifinal and final of the same World Cup. His partnership with Rahul aimed to revive India’s innings, but Australia’s bowlers maintained pressure by taking wickets at regular intervals.
Mitchell Starc claimed three wickets, while Hazlewood and Cummins secured two each, ultimately dismissing India for 240 in the allotted 50 overs. The final wicket fell dramatically, with Kuldeep Yadav getting run out on the last ball while attempting a double.
Opting to bat first, India enjoyed a positive start with Captain Rohit Sharma adopting an aggressive approach. Sharma’s early flurry of boundaries was halted when Mitchell Starc dismissed Shubman Gill in the fifth over. Despite occasional setbacks, Rohit Sharma persisted in scoring boundaries and formed a 46-run partnership with Virat Kohli before Australia’s bowlers asserted control over the game.
