Team India skipper Rohit Sharma was heartbroken following their loss against Australia in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 final on Sunday, November 19 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. He acknowledged the team’s failure to perform well with the bat. The hosts lost to Australia by six wickets in the final.

Team India was asked to bat first by Pat Cummins. They managed 240 runs on the back of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul’s partnership. They had lost three wickets for 81 runs on the board when Virat Kohli and KL Rahul got together at the crease. The duo added 67 runs on the board to steady the Indian innings. However, the lower middle order couldn’t accelerate at the end. Australia chased it down with six wickets in hand. Speaking following India’s loss in the final, Rohit Sharma said,

“The result has not gone our way. We were not good enough today. We tried everything but it wasn’t supposed to be. 20-30 runs more would have been good, KL and Kohli were stitching a good partnership and we were looking at 270-280 but we kept losing wickets.”

“We knew under lights it would be slightly better to bat, but don’t want to give that as an excuse. We didn’t put enough runs on the board,” he added.

Australia was in a spot of bother having lost three wickets for 47 runs, chasing 241 runs. Travis and Marnus Labuschagne stayed unbeaten to power them to their sixth World Cup title. Marnus Labuschange played a valuable hand of 58 runs. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma credited the Aussie duo for their partnership. He said,

“When you have 240 on the board, you want to take wickets but credit to Head and Labuschagne who stitched together a big partnership and put us completely out of the game. We tried everything…”

“With the seamers upfront, we took those 3 wickets and another wicket there, we could open up the game. Credit to those two guys in the middle for stitching an outstanding partnership,” added Rohit Sharma.
