The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) with immediate effect. The sport’s global governing body announced the decision on Friday evening, after a board meeting. Sri Lanka Cricket has breached its obligations as a Member of the ICC.
Recently, owing to the Sri Lankan team’s dismal performance in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, Sri Lanka’s parliament passed a resolution to sack their cricket governing body’s management. Following this development, the ICC announced its decision to suspend the body due to government interference. They wrote in their statement,
“The ICC Board met today and determined that Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations as a Member, in particular, the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government interference in the governance, regulation and/or administration of cricket in Sri Lanka.”
Earlier, Sri Lanka sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe accused the cricket board of widespread corruption. He sacked the members of the board and replaced them with an interim committee. The committee was headed by former skipper Arjuna Ranatunga. However, the appeal court restored the original board for two weeks on Tuesday pending a full hearing.
