The race for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 qualification is getting interesting as the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 is heading towards the business end. The top seven teams and Pakistan, who are the hosts will qualify for the tournament. Meanwhile, cricketing giants England are in a spot of bother as they are at risk of losing out on qualifying for the Champions Trophy.
England has had a dismal run so far in the 2023 World Cup. They rank seventh currently with four points from eight matches. Their only two wins this season have come against Bangladesh and the Netherlands. Their recent win has boosted their chances of qualifying for the Champions Trophy. However, their fate still lies in the results of other teams. Let’s take a look at how England can qualify for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
How England can qualify for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy?
England will take on Pakistan in their last match of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. The all-important clash will take place on Saturday, November 11 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The Jos Buttlerled team cannot afford to lose this match. They need to register a win against Pakistan to stand a chance to qualify for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
England also needs any two of Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Netherlands to lose their respective final matches. Bangladesh plays against Australia, Sri Lanka takes on New Zealand, while the Netherlands plays against India. In the above-mentioned scenario, England will have six points and will finish at number 7 or 8 and will be guaranteed a place in the tournament.
However, if all four of England, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Netherlands or, even three of them win their remaining matches, NRR will come into play. England currently has the best NRR among the four teams. They need to ensure that it doesn’t go below the other teams.
In case, England loses to Pakistan, they will need the rest of the three teams to also lose, and by a margin which keeps England’s NRR better than them.
