ICC T20 World Cup 2021: 3 Captains With Most Runs in T20 World Cups

T20 World Cup

The Super 12 round of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 will begin with Australia taking on South Africa in the first Group 1 encounter at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, October 23. The second match of the day will be a replay of the 2016 T20 World Cup final, with England facing West Indies at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The first two matches will feature two captains with the most runs in the tournament since its inception.

Captains over the years have played key roles with the bat in ICC tournaments. Indian skipper Virat Kohli for instance has ended up being the player of the tournament in the 2014 and 2016 editions.

In this article, we take a look at the three captains with the most runs in ICC T20 World Cups.

1) Virat Kohli

Kohli has been India’s batting mainstay since a few years now. He produced his best with the bat in T20 World Cups in the 2014 and 2016 editions. He scored 319 in the 2914 edition and 273 in the 2016 edition.

However, in recent times, Virat Kohli has not been in the best of form with the bat. Kohli’s inability to break free in IPL 2021 though has raised a few concerns about his game.

Overall, in 16 matches, he has clobbered 777 runs at a strike rate of 133.04 with nine fifties and a best of 89 not out. Kohli averages a staggering 86.33 in the T20 World Cup and was named Player of the Series in the last two editions.

2) Aaron Finch

The Australian skipper comes into this tournament with unfinished business. The Aussies have been one of the most dominant teams in the past but are yet to win the ICC T20 World Cup title. Bilateral series defeats against Bangladesh and West Indies in the build-up to the World Cup has put all the focus on their upcoming performance.

Finch has a point to prove with the bat as well. In 76 matches, Finch has 2473 runs to his name at an average of 37.46 and an exceptional strike rate of 150.24.

Finch has 216 runs in six games at an average of 36. His best of 71 came against Bangladesh in the 2014 edition.

3) Eoin Morgan

The England skipper is one the best hitters in T20 cricket. However, his recent form is a big cause of concern for the team. He had a forgetful stint with Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL recently.

With the T20 World Cup coming up, he has a chance to regain his lost form. Morgan is England’s leading run-scorer in the T20I format. In 107 games, he has notched up 2360 runs at a strike rate of 138.25 with 14 fifties.

Overall in 23 games, Morgan has 484 runs to his name in the T20 World Cup games. His best of 71 not out came off 36 balls against West Indies in Sri Lanka during the 2012 edition in a losing cause.
