A conflict of interest case has been filed against MS Dhoni after he was appointed the mentor of the Indian team which has been announced for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the UAE. Former Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association life member Sanjeev Gupta has filed the complaint against Dhoni. He has previously filed complaints against other players too.

Sanjeev Gupta has sent a letter to the apex council members that Dhoni’s appointment is a violation of the Conflict of Interest clause, under which one person cannot hold two posts. Dhoni is currently the captain of Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. Thus his appointment as Team India mentor is being seen as a conflict of interest case.

“Yes, Gupta has sent a letter to apex council members including Sourav (Ganguly) and Jay (Shah). He has cited clause 38 (4) of the BCCI constitution which loosely states that one person cannot be holding two separate posts. The Apex Council will need to consult its legal team to check the ramifications,” a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Dhoni was named mentor for WT20 by secretary Jay Shah on the sidelines of the squad announcement on Wednesday. Meanwhile, he is currently in the UAE preparing for the second half of IPL 2021.

The most successful captain of India with three ICC titles to his name MS Dhoni played 90 Tests, 350 ODIs, 98 T20 Internationals amassing 4876, 10773 and 1617 runs respectively across formats.

Meanwhile, a BCCI official has countered Gupta’s charges of Dhoni being involved in a conflict of interest issue. He has said that since the T20 World Cup will happen in the UAE after the IPL, all the players will be free agents with a mega auction scheduled ahead of next year’s IPL. This gives the Indian skipper a clean chit.

“T20 World Cup is happening after IPL, at this time all the players are free agents since there is a mega auction coming up next year and MS Dhoni will be guiding the players in T20 world so there is no kind of conflict of interest involved” the BCCI official was quoted as saying by ANI.
