The Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) recently roped in former captain MS Dhoni as the mentor for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2021. Many experts and former cricketers have welcomed the decision. Recently, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly explained the reason behind having Dhoni with the Men in Blue for the global T20 meet.

MS Dhoni is arguably the most successful Indian captain in history. India have won three ICC titles under his leadership, the most by a captain in history. Speaking to The Telegraph, Sourav Ganguly highlighted that having a heavyweight always helps in this kind of premier tournament.

“It’s just to help the side in the World Cup. He has a good record in the T20 format for India and the Chennai Super Kings. There has been a lot of thought behind it. We discussed a lot and then decided to have him on board. We haven’t won an ICC trophy since 2013. Remember Australia had Steve Waugh in a similar role when they drew the Ashes 2-2 in England the last time. The presence of such heavyweights in big-ticket events always helps,” Sourav Ganguly said.

MS Dhoni will bring in a lot of experience to the table which will be helpful for the youngsters in pressure games. India begin their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 24 in Dubai.

Sourav Ganguly defends Ravi Shastri over book launch event

In the wake of the fifth Test at Manchester being canceled, Team India’s head coach Ravi Shastri received severe criticisms. Shastri was the first member from the Indian squad to contract the COVID-19 disease before another couple of members tested COVID-19 positive which led to the cancelation of the Test match.

Sourav Ganguly defended Shastri when asked about whether any action will be taken against the Indian cricket team’s head coach.

“Nothing. How long can you stay confined to your hotel rooms? Can you stay locked at your home day in and day out? You can’t be restricted to a life where you go from the hotel to the ground and return to the hotel. This is humanly not possible. I was there at the shoot for a Dadagiri episode today. There were some 100 people there.… All fully vaccinated but you don’t know what will happen. People are contracting the virus even after two doses. This is how life is now,” stated Sourav Ganguly.
