Pakistan’s spin-bowling all-rounder, Imad Wasim, is uncertain for their highly anticipated T20 World Cup 2024 encounter against India on Sunday in New York. ESPNcricinfo reported that the final decision on his participation will be made on the match day after evaluating his fitness.
The experienced cricketer was absent for the final match of the T20I series against England, with the PCB citing precautionary measures. However, the suspected rib injury seems to be more severe, as he also missed the game against the USA in Dallas, contributing to the tourists’ surprising loss.
Imad’s absence has posed challenges for the Men in Green in terms of team balance. They had to include Azam Khan, who appeared to be out of form, and Shadab Khan, their primary spinner, who has struggled to take wickets as anticipated. The 35-year-old ended his retirement to participate in the T20 World Cup, but his injury now threatens his chances of playing.
Pakistan is at risk of being knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2024
The 2009 T20 World Cup champions are at risk of an early exit from the group stage as they prepare to face a formidable Indian team. Even with a loss to Rohit Sharma’s squad, Pakistan will still have a slim chance of qualifying for the Super 8 stage, but it will be a difficult task.
Both Canada and Ireland have shown they can compete with any team. Pakistan has only managed to defeat their arch-rivals once in seven T20 World Cup encounters.
In the 2022 T20 World Cup match between the two teams, Virat Kohli’s brilliant performance at the Melbourne Cricket Ground secured the victory for Team India. Although Babar Azam and his team reached the final, they were defeated by England, who claimed their second tournament title.
