Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar has lauded the current Indian team, emphasizing that it is no longer just a “batting powerhouse” but a well-rounded squad with world-class pacers and spinners.
Speaking on the sixth season of Backstage with Boria, Tendulkar highlighted the team’s fearless approach and the blend of youth and experience.
“This team is filled with talent and has a great mix of youth and experience. What excites me the most is the fearless approach they have. Players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and now Shubman Gill are carrying forward the legacy in their own way. Also, the way our bowlers have evolved is fantastic. India is no longer just a batting powerhouse – we have world-class pacers and spinners as well,” he said.
A Balanced Team with Batting and Bowling Firepower
Tendulkar’s words reflect India’s transformation in recent years. While batting has been India’s traditional strength, with stars like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, and KL Rahul dominating across formats, the team’s bowling unit has been equally impactful.
Spinners like Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have been instrumental in India’s home Test dominance, while pacers such as Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, and Ishant Sharma have changed perceptions about Indian fast bowling.
The emergence of young speedsters like Mayank Yadav, Umran Malik, and Kartik Tyagi has further bolstered India’s attack, making them a force to reckon with in all conditions. Despite occasional setbacks in knockout matches, India’s recent performances, including their unbeaten run to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 final and consecutive T20 World Cup and ICC Champions Trophy wins, have solidified their reputation in white-ball cricket.
The Evolution of Cricket and the Value of Test Matches
As cricket continues to evolve with the rise of T20 leagues, Tendulkar acknowledged their role in providing young players a platform but reinforced the importance of Test cricket.
“T20 leagues like the IPL have given young players a platform to express themselves. But at the same time, Test cricket remains the ultimate challenge. The format demands patience, technique, and endurance. I always tell young cricketers that no matter how much T20 you play, Test cricket will always be the true test of a cricketer’s ability,” he stated.
His remarks underscore the significance of red-ball cricket in shaping well-rounded players despite the growing popularity of shorter formats.
