Star Indian Umpire Shifts His Career From Umpiring To Commentary

After officiating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for 17 seasons, Anil Chaudhary has stepped into the commentary box, marking a new chapter in his cricketing journey. Having turned 60 last week, his age signaled the end of his umpiring career. His final officiating duties took place in the Ranji Trophy final between Kerala and Vidarbha in Nagpur, while his last international appearance was in September 2023. Over his career, Chaudhary officiated in 12 Tests, 49 ODIs, and 64 T20s.

Looking ahead, he decided to pursue commentary, particularly in regional languages, which have gained significant popularity in recent years. He will be part of the Haryanvi commentary team for IPL 2024 and will occasionally contribute to Hindi broadcasts. Speaking about his transition, Chaudhary mentioned that he had been preparing for this shift over the past few months and was also involved in teaching umpiring and commentary through an online platform.

He noted that while he previously officiated around 15 matches per IPL season, he will now be covering over 50 games as a commentator. He believes his perspective as a former umpire adds value to the discussions, providing insights different from those of former players.

Challenges in Indian Umpiring and Need for Practical Training

Despite a long and fulfilling career, Chaudhary never made it to the ICC Elite Panel, a goal that has remained elusive for many Indian umpires. Since 2020, only one Indian, Nitin Menon, has been part of the prestigious panel. Chaudhary attributes this struggle to an overemphasis on theoretical knowledge rather than practical application. He believes many Indian umpires get too caught up in the rulebook instead of understanding the spirit of the game.

He also highlighted the excessive stress umpires endure, including improper eating habits and insufficient focus on fitness. According to Chaudhary, former players have a natural edge in umpiring as they understand the game’s nuances better than those who have never played at any level. He also emphasized the need for umpires to maintain high fitness standards, as modern cricket demands increased physical endurance.

Memorable Moments and Challenging Players to Officiate

Throughout his career, Chaudhary officiated matches featuring some of the biggest names in cricket, including M.S. Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma. He shared that his rapport with players, built over time through casual off-field interactions, played a crucial role in earning their respect. While Kohli often disagreed with his decisions, he later acknowledged when the calls were correct. Rohit, he noted, was an easy batsman to officiate due to his flawless technique, while Dhoni always made logical arguments when discussing decisions.

Among bowlers, Chaudhary found Kuldeep Yadav particularly challenging to umpire due to his variations and the bounce he generates. Internationally, David Warner and Stuart Broad were among the toughest players to officiate, though he enjoyed the experience. As he embarks on his commentary career, Chaudhary carries with him years of expertise and a unique perspective that will enrich cricket broadcasting.
