Vijay Hazare became the first Indian captain to score centuries in two consecutive Tests against England. This historic achievement came during the 1951–52 home series. In his very first match as Test captain in Delhi, Hazare played a splendid knock of 164 not out.
He followed it up with another outstanding performance in the next match at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, scoring 155 runs. Despite his consistent form and leadership, both games ended in draws. Hazare’s efforts marked a golden beginning to his tenure as captain and set a high standard for future Indian skippers.
Azharuddin Shines in England in 1990
Mohammad Azharuddin joined this elite group in 1990 when India toured England. He was captaining the Indian Test side for the first time against England at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground. Azhar impressed everyone with a powerful 121 off just 111 balls in the first innings.
Although England won that Test by 247 runs, Azhar’s innings stood out for its flair and aggression. He carried that momentum into the second Test in Manchester, where he scored a magnificent 179, helping India secure a draw. His back-to-back centuries as a leader showcased his ability to handle pressure and lead by example.
Shubman Gill Joins the Elite Club in 2025
Shubman Gill became the latest Indian captain to achieve this rare feat during the 2025 Test series against England. Making his captaincy debut in Leeds on June 20, Gill scored a classy 147 in the first innings.
Despite India losing the match by five wickets, Gill’s performance was widely praised. He continued his fine form into the second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham, where he notched up another century on Day 1. His fluent batting took India past the 300-run mark.
With this, Gill became only the third Indian skipper to score hundreds in two back-to-back Tests against England, and the fourth to do so in his first two Tests as captain. His entry into this distinguished list highlights his growing maturity as both a batter and a leader.
