Shubman Gill etched his name in Indian cricket history by becoming only the second Indian captain after Virat Kohli to score a century at Edgbaston in a Test match. Gill’s innings came at a crucial time for India after they were reduced to 95/2 early on. He took charge and steadied the innings with a vital 66-run partnership alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. The pair cautiously rebuilt the innings after the dismissals of KL Rahul and Karun Nair, with Gill surviving a close leg-before call against Chris Woakes.
Soon after, he released pressure by hitting back-to-back boundaries off Woakes in the 33rd over. His calm and composed presence in the middle was vital in preventing a collapse. By scoring centuries in his first two Tests as captain, Gill joined an elite list featuring Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, and Virat Kohli. He also became the latest Indian after Dilip Vengsarkar, Rahul Dravid, and Mohammad Azharuddin to record three consecutive hundreds against England.
Reaching his maiden Test hundred outside Asia in just 140 balls with 14 fours, Gill became the fourth Indian to score a century in the first innings as Test captain after legends like Hazare, Gavaskar, and Kohli. Notably, he also crossed the 2,000-run mark in Tests during this innings, a feat Kohli had achieved during his captaincy debut at Adelaide in 2014. At just 25, Gill has already begun crafting a legacy of his own.
