India captain Shubman Gill and vice-captain Rishabh Pant stitched together a 47-run stand for the fourth wicket on Day 1 (Wednesday, July 2) of the second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham, after England opted to bowl first. During their partnership, a conversation between the two regarding their running between the wickets was picked up by the stump microphone.
Pant was heard mentioning that the ball had started to soften, and the duo also briefly discussed the importance of clear communication while attempting singles. The left-hander advised Gill not to anticipate the run and instead focus on making a proper call. Pant was caught on the mic saying:
“Dekh lenge call pe. Pehle hi mat decide kar kuch bhi. Call rakhenge ek.” (It depends on the call. Don’t preempt anything. Stick to one call.)

Rishabh Pant fell for 25 in the 61st over, caught at long-on off Shoaib Bashir, ending a 47-run stand with Shubman Gill. Earlier, Gill reached his fifty with a boundary and remains unbeaten on 87, while Ravindra Jadeja is on 25*. India currently stands at 262/5.
Pant-Gill Heroics Not Enough As England Clinch 1st Test Win
Rishabh Pant delivered a sensational performance with the bat in the series opener against England at Headingley, Leeds, becoming the first Indian wicketkeeper to score centuries in both innings of a Test, with knocks of 134 and 118. Shubman Gill also made a strong impact, scoring a brilliant 147 in the first innings on his Test captaincy debut.
Despite these standout efforts, India fell short, losing the match by five wickets in a disappointing outcome. England chased down a challenging 371-run target in the fourth innings, registering the tenth-highest successful run chase in Test history.
As the series moves to the second Test, Gill and his team will be aiming for a strong comeback. However, history is against India at Edgbaston, where they have never won a Test match. Out of eight games played at the venue, India have suffered seven defeats and managed just one draw.
