India captain Shubman Gill reached his half-century in impressive fashion on Day 1 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Wednesday, July 2. Facing spinner Shoaib Bashir, Gill advanced down the pitch and struck a boundary to bring up his fifty.
This marked his eighth Test half-century. The milestone came during the 57th over of India’s first innings. Bashir tossed up a flighted delivery, which Gill judged well. Showing great footwork and timing, the 25-year-old drove the ball powerfully over mid-on for four runs.

Shubman Gill delivered an outstanding performance in the first innings of the series opener at Headingley, scoring a commanding 147 runs off 227 deliveries, which included 19 fours and a six. However, his contribution in the second innings was limited, as he was dismissed after scoring just eight runs.
Jaiswal and Gill fifties power India past 200 on Day 1 of 2nd Test vs England
Half-centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill guided India past the 200-run mark on Day 1 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston. Jaiswal set the tone with a fluent 87 off 107 balls, hitting 13 boundaries and showing great control. Karun Nair added a steady 31 off 50 deliveries, helping build a solid platform. However, KL Rahul, despite his recent form, was dismissed cheaply for just two runs.
At the time of reporting, India stood at 202/3 after 59 overs, with Gill unbeaten on 53 (134 balls) and Rishabh Pant on 23 (59 balls), looking to anchor the innings further. For England, Ben Stokes, Brydon Carse, and Chris Woakes claimed one wicket each as they tried to contain the scoring.
England, who lead the five-match series 1-0 after a successful 371-run chase in the Headingley opener, had also outplayed India during their last Edgbaston meeting in 2022, chasing down 378 with ease. With pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah rested for this match, India will need a complete team effort to level the series.
