The match between Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad was a cliffhanger in IPL 2021. Eventually, the first super over had to be played in this IPL season to determine a winner.

While chasing the target of 159, it was Kane Williamson who brought his A-game for Sunrisers Hyderabad. On a challenging wicket, he stood tall and scored 66 in 51 balls as the scores of both sides were 157 runs after 20 overs.

Then in the super over the duo of skipper David Warner and Kane Williamson batted against Axar Patel. The left-arm spinner used the pitch to his advantage and kept spinning the ball.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad could only manage 9 runs in the all-important super over. Then because of 1 short-run Delhi Capitals had to chase 8 runs. As expected Sunrisers Hyderabad gave the ball to their magician Rashid Khan in the super over. Two lefties Rishabh Pant and Dhawan were the right choices against him.

They kept their cool and took the Delhi Capitals home by taking a single on the final ball. Pant’s side won a thriller which IPL 2021 needed after several one-sided matches. Meanwhile here’s what the captains and the man of the match said in the post-match presentation.

“It has been a tough one. The way our bowlers came back after the powerplay was fantastic. We knew on this surface if you got off to a flier it is always going to be tough in the middle, the bowlers executed well. I thought Vijay, who is not one of our strike bowlers, bowled fantastically, could have bowled him an extra one, that’s the handiness of having him in the middle but the bowlers got us to a good total to chase. Obviously Jonny at the top of the order and Kane taking it deep, we couldn’t bat well in the middle overs”.

“Williamson maneuvered the middle overs well but he seemed to be running out of gas towards the end and it was Suchith’s cameo that gave the final flourish for a Super Over finish. Axar was too good though on a pitch where things were stacked in his favour”, said Warner.

“It was a thrilling game and shouldn’t have gone to the Super Over. We should have won it easily, but we made few mistakes but that’s part of the journey. I feel that the two boundaries which Avesh got hit, we should have contained them. But, it’s part of the game. We were dominating the game whole time, shouldn’t have let it go that way in the end. It was very tough to bat specially after the powerplay, turning and holding.

Kane Williamson played a good knock, he’s a champion player and he always shows his class. It’s good to win the game in the end. We made it quite thrilling going to the Super Over and chasing it down. Those little things make a huge impact, I am glad that David didn’t complete that run, we got the edge over that and we ended up winning the game.

Absolutely, looking forward for it (Ahmedabad) and glad that the wicket’s going to be a bit more better than this one. We are playing nice as a team. We are not depending on one player”, said acting captain of DC Shikhar Dhawan.

“It was a good wicket in the first six overs and then it slowed down, but it was fine. I felt the wicket was behaving a bit slower, the spinners were bowling well. 160 was good enough to defend, but a close game. I am just doing all those stuff I have worked with. It’s helping me right now, so I think I should continue that.

“I didn’t think about it (Super Over) but Williamson played fantastic. He played a really good knock. Axar bowled really well in the Super Over. I wasn’t there, I knew Shikhar bhai and Pant would go for sure because Rashid was going to bowl for sure. So, they wanted Pant and Shikhi to go and hit”, said the man of the match Prithvi Shaw who made an outstanding fifty.
