IPL 2023: David Warner To Lead Delhi Capitals, Axar Patel To Be Vice-Captain

Australian opener David Warner will lead the Delhi Capitals in the 2023 Indian Premier League, which begins on March 31. He will replace wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant as the skipper of the franchise. Meanwhile, all-rounder Axar Patel will be David Warner’s deputy. The Delhi Capitals released a statement to make important announcements.

Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the upcoming Indian Premier League season, as he is recovering from a horrific car accident. He will be out of action for several months. In his absence, David Warner will handle the leadership responsibility of the Delhi Capitals. Axar Patel will be his deputy, assisting the opening batter in the role. Speaking about his appointment as the captain, David Warner in a statement released by the franchise,

“Rishabh has been a terrific leader for Delhi Capitals, and we’re all going to miss having him around. I would like to thank the management for the faith and trust they’ve always shown in me. This franchise has always been home for me, and I couldn’t be more excited to lead such a supremely talented bunch of players. I can’t wait to meet them all, and get cracking!”

David Warner has immense leadership experience under his belt. He has led the Sunrisers Hyderabad to their maiden Indian Premier League title in 2016. The Australian cricketer was signed by the Delhi Capitals in the 2022 auction for 6.25 crore. He was the leading run-scorer for the franchise in the season, with 432 runs at an average of 48, including five fifties. Meanwhile, Axar Patel scored 182 runs at an average of 45.50 and took six wickets in the 2022 season.

Delhi Capitals announce Sourav Ganguly as Director of Cricket

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly will be the Director of Cricket at the Delhi Capitals. He has been a part of the Delhi Capitals in the past too. During the 2019 Indian Premier League season, Ganguly was the mentor for the franchise. Talking about his appointment, he said in a statement released by the franchise,

“I’m excited to be back with the Delhi Capitals. My association with the women’s team, and the Pretoria Capitals over the last few months has been fantastic, and I’m looking forward to the upcoming season of the IPL. Delhi Capitals had done well as a team during my last stint with them. I’ve already been involved with the players this time around, and I’m keen to see them as a group. Hopefully, we will all have a great time over the next couple of months.”
