Sourav Ganguly Talks About MS Dhoni’s Influence On Indian Cricket

Former BCCI President Sourav Ganguly spoke about MS Dhoni’s contribution to Indian Cricket as unparallel. He has bought many laurels for the country, especially in white ball format.

MS Dhoni made his One-day international debut in 2004 when Sourav Ganguly was the captain of the side. Under the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly, the Indian team reached the finals of the ICC World Cup 2003 losing to a strong Australian side at Johannesburg.

Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni meet on a commercial shoot in Mumbai with both captains having some discussions. Dhoni’s contribution to Indian cricket will be remembered for long-time winning the Test series in New Zealand and other memorable moments.

“I feel proud – I can’t keep saying it – that two of India’s pretty successful captains came from a part of the country where people thought cricket wasn’t at its best,” Ganguly continued. “That’s where MS Dhoni comes in; he’s changed a generation of players around him to believe that ‘I can be successful’ from here. Look at Ishan Kishan, look at the way he plays international cricket.”

Under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma was asked to open the innings in a One-day international format in the 2013 Champions Trophy match against South Africa and since then Rohit has been an explosive batter with 3 double centuries including record-breaking induvial ODI score of 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014.

MS Dhoni’s trophy cabinet

MS Dhoni is one of the most successful captains in the world. He led India to the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 beating arch-rivals Pakistan. His performance continued beating Australia in Australia during the best of 3 finals of the Tri-series including Sri Lanka and hosts Australia.

Dhoni showed his abilities with captaincy skills by leading India to the 50 Over World Cup after a gap of 28 years on Indian soil in 2011. After Kapil Dev, Dhoni became the 2nd Indian captain to win the prestigious title.

He then backed with another ICC title winning the Champions Trophy title in 2013 defeating hosts England.

Disappointments

There were some disappointments as India lost to Australia in the semi-finals of the 50 Over World Cup in 2015. MS Dhoni’s career ended with a run-out losing the SF of the 2019 World Cup finals. He was a part of the team that lost in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2016.

The Indian team failed to win ICC Champions Trophy 2017 losing to arch-rivals Pakistan in England. It was an illustrious career for MS Dhoni winning almost every ICC title.
