IPL 2023 Final: Can Shubman Gill Surpass Virat Kohli’s Incredible Record?

In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, Gujarat Titans (GT) opener Shubman Gill has been in outstanding form. He currently holds the Orange Cap after scoring 851 runs in 16 games at an average of 60 points and a strike rate of 156 points. Apart from four fifty-sevens, the 23-year-old has accumulated up to three tons.

The three tons, astonishingly, have come in his last four innings. When playing SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Ahmedabad, Gill scored his first IPL century by slamming 101 off 58 balls.

Following that, he scored 104* off 52 balls in a Bengaluru chase of 198 to eliminate Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) from the IPL 2023.

He was dismissed for 42 off 38 against CSK at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk in Qualifier 1, but in Qualifier 2 against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Ahmedabad, he smashed a sensational 129 off only 60 balls.

With his amazing ton, Shubman Gill put on a show and mesmerized everyone

Following their 62-run thrashing of MI, GT’s knock guaranteed them a spot in the IPL 2023 championship game. He also surpassed RCB captain Faf du Plessis (730) on the list of top run scorers in the IPL 2023 with the special effort. Even though Gill has scored more than 850 runs in the current season, he is still far behind Virat Kohli in terms of the most runs scored in an IPL season.

The latter scored 973 runs for RCB in 16 games during the 2016 IPL season. As a result of his 81.08 average and 152.03 strike rate, Kohli scored four tons and seven fifty-sevens.

Gill must score 123 runs in the IPL 2023 championship game against Chennai Super Kings on Sunday to surpass Kohli’s record. This is a bit unlikely, but not inconceivable given the batter’s exceptional recent performance with the bat.

Will Shubman Gill surpass Jos Buttler?

Gill is currently ranked third overall among batters with the most runs scored in an IPL season. Jos Buttler, the opening batsman for Rajasthan Royals (RR), is second on the illustrious list, which Kohli heads.

During IPL 2022, the England batter scored 863 runs in 17 games at an average of 57.53 and a strike rate of 149.05. In the previous year’s competition, Buttler scored four tons and an equal number of fifties.

In the IPL final of 2023, Gill needs to score 13 runs to pass Buttler and take over the No. 1 spot. 2nd place. Only one other batter, David Warner, has amassed more than 800 runs for a single team in the IPL (848 runs for SRH in 2016).
