Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was involved in a controversial incident during the Qualifier 1 of the 2023 Indian Premier League against the Gujarat Titans on Sunday, May 24 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Former cricketer Brad Hogg has shared his disappointment over the incident.
During the second innings, Chennai Super Kings pacer Matheesha Pathirana was out of the field for four minutes. He got back on the field as he was assigned to bowl the fifteenth over of the innings. The umpires on the field objected to the decision, as a bowler who has gone out of the field, has to serve the same time on the field before bowling.
Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was seen in an animated conversation with the umpires. Matheesha Pathirana and Moeen Ali too joined the conversation. To ensure that Pathirana bowls the fifteenth over, the Chennai Super Kings resorted to time-wasting tactics. Brad Hogg shared his thoughts on the incident through Twitter. He wrote,
“Dhoni used his presence to full effect, luring the umpires into a 4-minute discussion causing time to run out for Pathirana to bowl after an extended break off the field. Umpires laughing over the incident rather than taking control of the situation is not good enough.”
