IPL 2024: “I Was Very Disappointed” – RCB’s Swapnil Singh Recalls His Auction Time

Swapnil Singh has swiftly risen to prominence, playing a crucial role in Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s unexpected advance to the IPL playoffs. The spin-bowling all-rounder debuted for RCB in Hyderabad last month and has been integral to their six consecutive victories.

Swapnil’s journey is one of fulfillment and redemption, having nearly abandoned his cricket career before being picked up by RCB at the auction. His story underscores how talent can thrive in a supportive environment.

In an interview on RCB Bold Diaries following the team’s playoff qualification at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Swapnil shared that he had considered retirement before being selected by RCB, marking an emotional moment for him and his family. He credited RCB head coach Andy Flower for his faith, noting that Flower had been impressed with his performance as a net bowler and invited him to an RCB training camp.

Upon joining the RCB squad, Swapnil felt assured that his opportunity to play would come and was mentally prepared to await his turn.

Swapnil Singh said: “The day of the IPL auction I was travelling to Dharamsala for a game. It was around 7-8 pm after I landed. Nothing had happened by then and the last rounds were on. When I missed out at first, I thought that’s it. Frankly I thought it was all over.”

“I thought I would play out the ongoing (domestic) season, and if needed, I would end my career after playing the next season because I did not want to keep playing all my life. There are other things to do well in life as well. I was very disappointed.”

“As soon as my family called, we broke down. Because no one else understands how emotional the journey has been. Before RCB picked me in the auction, they had organized a trial-cum-camp. I spoke to Andy sir and told him all about how my (domestic) season had gone. I told him, ‘Just give me one chance. This might be my last chance. Just have faith in me.’ He told he had faith in me. He called me for the camp.”

Royal Challengers Bengaluru began their IPL 2024 season disastrously, losing six consecutive matches. However, they managed to secure a playoff spot in their final match. RCB achieved a dramatic turnaround by defeating Chennai Super Kings by 27 runs in their last league game at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday, thus qualifying for the playoffs.

Despite their poor start, Faf du Plessis’ team won six successive matches, including the decisive one against CSK, finishing with the same points as Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants, and Delhi Capitals, but still managing to squeeze into the top four.
