IPL 2024: “It Doesn’t Make Sense” – Tom Moody On DC Choosing Ricky Bhui Over Prithvi Shaw

Tom Moody, the former Australian cricketer, thinks Delhi Capitals (DC) should choose Prithvi Shaw over Ricky Bhui for their upcoming matches in IPL 2024. Moody highlighted that despite Shaw’s lackluster performance in recent seasons, opting for him over Bhui is preferable due to his extensive experience in international cricket.

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Moody stated:

“It doesn’t make sense due to the fact that you’ve got an Indian international player (Prithvi Shaw) in the dugout. Yes, he hasn’t performed in the IPL like we had all hoped he would, but you can’t score runs from the dugout.”

Prithvi Shaw sat out Delhi’s initial two matches of the season. Ricky Bhui, a prominent figure in domestic cricket, failed to make an impact, scoring 3 and 0 against Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) respectively.

Wasim Jaffer also voiced his astonishment at Delhi’s decision to keep Shaw in the squad despite his non-inclusion in the playing XI for the first two IPL 2024 matches. Commenting on the absence of the dynamic opener from DC’s initial fixtures, he remarked:

“Now that they have held onto him and not let him go into the auction, I’m surprised they’re not playing him. He’s played for Mumbai for most of the season, so you’d imagine that he’s fit. I’m surprised. Punishing him and then losing the games is not the way to go forward.”

Prithvi Shaw faced criticism after a series of disappointing performances in IPL 2023, managing only 106 runs from eight matches at an average of 13.25. However, he displayed good form in domestic cricket, scoring 451 runs in nine innings at an average of 50.11 during the Ranji Trophy 2023/24 season.

“What it does also is highlight the jump between Ranji Trophy runs to international cricket and IPL” -Tom Moody’s thoughts on Ricky Bhui’s dismissal in the RR vs DC match

Ricky Bhui was dismissed for a duck, caught behind, against Rajasthan on Thursday. The right-handed batsman fell victim to a sharp bouncer bowled by Nandre Burger. Commenting on the dismissal, Tom Moody noted that it highlighted the difference between domestic cricket and the IPL.

“That’s exactly what you’d like to see a genuine quick bowler to do. And to do it to a top order player is even more alarming. What it does also is highlight the jump between Ranji Trophy runs to international cricket and IPL.”

Ricky Bhui had a remarkable performance in the Ranji Trophy 2023/24 season, emerging as the top run-scorer with 902 runs in 13 innings at an average of 75.16. However, his exceptional form in domestic cricket has not yet reflected in the IPL.
