Delhi Capitals (DC) opener David Warner was defeated by his fellow Australian teammate Mitchell Starc in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) match against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Warner, a left-handed batsman, hit a 143 kmph delivery from Starc for a six measuring 85 meters on Wednesday.

However, he was dismissed off the very next delivery in the fifth over by chopping the ball onto his stumps, concluding his innings. Facing a challenging target of 273 runs, Warner had to accelerate right from the beginning. He confronted Vaibhav Arora in the second over, but DC’s chances suffered setbacks due to wickets falling at the other end.

After hitting a six off Starc’s delivery in the fifth over, the Australian attempted to challenge Starc by playing through the off side after the pacer bowled it on a length outside off stump. However, the left-handed batter could only manage to get an inside edge, which disturbed the middle stump, resulting in his dismissal from the crease.

The opening batsman departed after scoring 18 runs from 13 balls at a strike rate of 138.46, comprising two boundaries and a six.

David Warner was the fourth dismissal within the powerplay during DC’s innings

DC were considered the underdogs in the clash after KKR’s remarkable batting performance. However, both fans and experts anticipated a stronger batting performance from Delhi. Their struggle began early in the powerplay, with Varun Chakravarthy taking a smart catch at mid-on to dismiss Prithvi Shaw in the second over. Shortly after, Mitchell Marsh became Mitchell Starc’s first victim of the season, followed by Abhishek Porel departing without scoring any runs.

Warner showed promise during his brief time at the crease but ended up with the lowest score of the season (18). Despite this, the seasoned batsman has had a decent start to the season, scoring 29, 49, and 52 runs in the first three matches respectively.

Currently, KKR stands at 70-4 after eight overs, with Rishabh Pant and Tristan Stubbs working to repair the damage caused during the powerplay phase. A third loss of the season seems likely for DC. However, they aim to limit the damage to their net run rate, which currently stands at -0.016.
