In Kolkata Knight Riders’ inaugural fixture of IPL 2024, Andre Russell embarked on a breathtaking spree of six-hitting, dismantling the Sunrisers Hyderabad bowling unit with unparalleled ferocity on Saturday, March 23.

The Eden Gardens witnessed an electrifying spectacle as the seasoned West Indian batsman unleashed a masterclass in power-hitting, treating the audience to a thoroughly satisfying performance. Achieving his half-century in a mere 20 deliveries, Russell’s explosive innings of 64 runs off just 25 balls left co-owner Shah Rukh Khan visibly elated, applauding the display of one of his beloved Knight Riders.

Russell’s onslaught saw him dispatching the ball to the stands on seven occasions, with two towering sixes measuring a staggering 100 meters, propelling the Knight Riders to a formidable total of 208 runs within their allotted 20 overs. Despite a shaky start that saw Kolkata Knight Riders faltering at 51 for 4 in the 8th over, impactful contributions from Ramandeep Singh (35 off 17), Rinku Singh (23 off 15), and the explosive innings from Russell orchestrated a commendable recovery.

Moreover, Russell etched his name in the annals of IPL history by becoming only the ninth player to amass over 200 sixes in the tournament, with each one of them embellishing the Knight Riders’ campaign, a franchise he has been associated with since 2012. Russell’s imperious form was evident as he effortlessly launched the ball beyond the boundaries, with several hits exceeding the 100-meter mark at the Eden Gardens.

Partnering with Rinku Singh, Russell engineered an 81-run partnership, igniting a late surge that saw Kolkata Knight Riders amass 75 runs in the final five overs. Russell’s blitzkrieg began in the 14th over, and he further escalated his assault in the 16th over, where he mercilessly dispatched three consecutive deliveries from spinner Mayank Markande into the stands. Despite a close call at long-off, Russell’s rampage continued as he capitalized on veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s offerings, adding yet another maximum to his tally in the subsequent over.

The 19th over proved to be calamitous for SunRisers Hyderabad, as Bhuvneshwar Kumar bore the brunt of Russell’s onslaught, conceding a whopping 26 runs, with the lion’s share originating from Russell’s willow. It was an innings characterized by an extraordinary exhibition of power-hitting, with Russell seamlessly transitioning from his scintillating form in the Bangladesh Premier League to the grand stage of IPL 2024, following a stellar 29-ball 71 in a T20I encounter against Australia in February.

Despite the onslaught, T Natarajan emerged as the standout performer for SunRisers, claiming three crucial wickets and delivering a frugal final over amidst Russell’s rampage.
