Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill experienced a brief moment after winning the toss against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium as they prepared to face off in the seventh match of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL).
Initially, Gill called “tails” at the toss and won, expressing his preference to bat first. However, he quickly realized his error and promptly corrected himself, stating that he intended to bowl first instead.
Immediately after Narayanan Kutty, the match referee announced Gill’s victory in the toss, he approached the microphone and spoke:
“Bat first, bowl bowl first, sorry, bowl first!”

The upcoming match between CSK and GT will mark their sixth encounter. Out of the previous five games, Gujarat claimed victory in the first three, while Chennai emerged as winners in the last two, including the IPL 2023 Qualifier 1 and the IPL 2023 Final.
A clash between two emerging captains
Both Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shubman Gill are leading an IPL team for the first time. Gill assumed the captaincy of Gujarat Titans after former skipper Hardik Pandya joined Mumbai Indians (MI), while Gaikwad was appointed captain of his team, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), a day before the start of IPL 2024, succeeding MS Dhoni.
Both Gaikwad and Gill began their IPL captaincy careers with victories. CSK defeated the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the tournament’s opening match, while GT secured a win over MI, led by Hardik, in their campaign opener.
Both captains are riding high on the momentum of recent victories and aim to sustain their winning streak as they face each other. The victor of today’s match will claim the top position in the points table, with CSK currently in second place and GT in third.
