Mohammed Shami discussed Shubman Gill’s captaincy for Gujarat Titans ahead of their IPL 2024 match against Mumbai Indians on Sunday. Shubman Gill is poised to lead for the first time in the Indian Premier League on Sunday, facing off against former teammate Hardik Pandya in a highly anticipated match in Ahmedabad.
Hardik’s comeback to Mumbai Indians last year garnered significant attention and will undoubtedly be the focal point as he returns to Ahmedabad in a different jersey. Additionally, his replacement of Rohit Sharma as MI’s captain remains a contentious decision among many fans.
However, both teams will be eager to kick off with a win on Sunday. However, Mohammed Shami, the Gujarat Titans’ standout player who was sidelined due to injury, offered some advice to Gill as he gears up for his leadership role.
Shami conceded that captaincy has arrived sooner than expected for the young Indian, emphasizing the importance of not succumbing to the pressure of leadership.
“As you said (the anchor suggested that captaincy came early for Gill), the captaincy came early, and he wouldn’t have expected it; I feel the same.”
”But you had to take the responsibility one day. You have been performing well in past seasons and producing good performances in international cricket, too,” Shami said on Cricbuzz.
“You don’t have to take too much load over the captaincy, just be normal and have patience. The more you stay calm, the better it will be. You have the responsibility now; you can’t say no. Just focus on your skills and how you can balance your team,” Shami further said.
Gill, who secured the Orange Cap in the previous season and had an outstanding 2023, experienced a slight decline in form after the 2023 World Cup. However, he made a notable comeback to scoring runs during India’s five-Test series against England earlier this year.
Conclusion of the inaugural match-week
The Titans versus Indians match will conclude the initial match-week of this season, with each team having played one match. Chennai Super Kings, Punjab Kings, and Kolkata Knight Riders have all secured wins in their respective opening matches.
Prior to the Ahmedabad clash, Lucknow Super Giants will face Rajasthan Royals on Sunday.
