The 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season has been packed with breathtaking performances, close finishes, and thrilling moments. However, not every big name has lived up to the expectations placed on them. Several players, despite being stars or hefty purchases, have struggled to make an impact this season. While some may still bounce back in the second half of the tournament, their underwhelming displays have already been a major talking point among fans and analysts.
Here’s a look at the five biggest disappointments of IPL 2025 so far:
1. Glenn Maxwell – Punjab Kings
Glenn Maxwell’s return to the Punjab Kings was one of the most anticipated moves of the season. Signed for INR 4.2 crore, Maxwell was expected to add explosive firepower to the middle order. Instead, he has continued his poor IPL record, adding to his tally of most ducks in IPL history, now reaching 19.
His series of low scores has put immense pressure on Punjab’s batting lineup, and many are questioning whether he can regain the form that once made him a T20 superstar.
2. Rohit Sharma – Mumbai Indians
Rohit Sharma, a five-time IPL-winning captain, has had a disappointing run with the bat in IPL 2025. Although he played a brilliant unbeaten 76 in one match, his overall inconsistency has hurt Mumbai Indians’ top-order stability. Rohit’s struggles have coincided with Mumbai’s fluctuating fortunes this season, as the team desperately needs their veteran opener to find form consistently if they want to push for a playoff spot.
3. Rishabh Pant – Lucknow Super Giants
After a long recovery from injury, fans had high hopes for Rishabh Pant’s comeback. However, the dynamic wicketkeeper-batsman has looked far from his best in IPL 2025. His strike rate has dropped significantly, and he has struggled to anchor innings or finish games — roles he previously excelled in.
While his leadership remains spirited, his personal form with the bat has been a big concern for LSG as they struggle to build momentum.
4. Sherfane Rutherford – Gujarat Titans
Sherfane Rutherford’s signing was viewed as a smart move by Gujarat Titans, aiming to strengthen their lower middle order. Unfortunately, Rutherford has struggled for runs throughout the season.
His poor show in the Big Bash League hinted at a rough patch, and it has continued into the IPL. His lack of contributions has forced Gujarat to constantly shuffle their batting order, disturbing the team’s balance.
5. Hardik Pandya – Mumbai Indians
Another major flop this season has been Hardik Pandya. Returning to the Mumbai Indians as captain after a stint with the Gujarat Titans, much was expected from him. However, both his batting and bowling have lacked the sharpness fans are accustomed to.
His decision-making as captain has also been under scrutiny, with several tactical errors costing Mumbai crucial matches. Hardik’s below-par form has been one of the biggest talking points of IPL 2025.
