Karun Nair’s 89 off 40 was very much in vain, as Mumbai Indians achieved a nail-biting victory over Delhi Capitals by a close margin of 12 runs at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday. Batting second after DC, Everyone was out after scoring 193 for the minimum runs required to win, losing their last 3 wickets in just one over on the run-out.
Earlier, MI had a never-say-die fifty from Tilak Varma to reach 205 for 5 after electing to bat first. Tilak hit 59 runs in 33 balls, hitting 6 fours and 3 sixes. With Ryan Rickelton (41), Suryakumar Yadav (40), and Naman Dhir (38 not out) contributing somewhat to MI’s cause, Kuldeep Yadav continues to shine with the ball for Delhi with figures of 2 for 23 in four overs.
The spin twins Karn Sharma (3 for 36) and Mitchell Santner (2 for 43) brought MI back into the game during the 2nd innings. The poor running of DC batters helped MI’s cause as they fought back to clinch a narrow victory under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy.
Bumrah’s Magic Turns the Tide
A brilliant bowling display by Bumrah was the highlight of the match. In the 13th over, he took out Axar Patel and soon ripped apart Tristan Stubbs. However, the most important over that sealed the match in Bumrah’s favor was his 19th, during which three crucial run-outs led DC to the loss of Ashutosh Sharma, Kuldeep Yadav, and Mohit Sharma. It was too much for DC to come back from that collapse.
Tilak Varma’s Fifties Powers MI to Competitive Total
In the previous edition of the championship, before 205/5 was reached from 20 overs, it was a half-century by Tilak Varma. Varma ruthlessly was scoring runs because he had only taken 59 from 33 balls. Suryakumar Yadav also contributed a most vital 40 from 28 balls. With Naman Dhir not out at 38*, MI set up the challenge of 206 runs.
Karun Nair’s Blitzkrieg Not Enough for DC
In its pursuit, Karun Nair scored a raucous 89 off 40 balls, including a partnership of 100 with Abishek Porel. This innings by Nair wasn’t enough to surpass the mighty force of DC due to the late-game collapse brought on by Bumrah’s excellent bowling.
