Twitterati Reacts As Karun Nair Shines in His Comeback Game

Delhi Capitals’ Karun Nair delivered a standout performance against the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025, making an immediate impact in his first match of the season. Coming in as an impact substitute after Jake Fraser-McGurk was dismissed on the first ball, Nair stunned both fans and the formidable MI bowling unit with his fearless strokeplay. Taking charge early, he showed no signs of nerves as he aggressively counterattacked a star-studded lineup featuring Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, and Deepak Chahar.

Nair’s fluent innings began with him facing Bumrah head-on, scoring 26 off just 9 deliveries from the ace pacer. He reached his half-century in just 22 balls, raising his bat to the cheers of the home crowd at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Dominating the Powerplay

Nair’s powerplay assault put Delhi in a commanding position right from the start of their chase of 206. His dominant approach saw Delhi post 72 runs for the loss of just one wicket in the first six overs, with Nair leading the charge. His technique and timing stood out as he dispatched the bowlers to all parts of the ground. Commentator Harsha Bhogle aptly described his performance by saying, “Karun Nair is reading Bumrah like a textbook.” The veteran batter didn’t just rely on brute force—his calculated shot selection and ability to dismantle premier bowlers gave Delhi Capitals a strong foundation. Nair eventually fell for a blazing 89 off 40 balls, featuring 12 fours and 5 sixes, bowled by a beauty from Mitchell Santner.

Mumbai Sets a Competitive Target

Earlier in the match, Mumbai Indians posted a competitive total of 205/5 after being put in to bat by Delhi Capitals skipper Axar Patel. Tilak Varma led the charge with a fluent 59 off 33 balls, while Ryan Rickelton (41) and Suryakumar Yadav (40) made valuable contributions. Naman Dhir’s late fireworks—38 off just 17 deliveries—pushed the score past the 200-run mark. Kuldeep Yadav and Vipraj Nigam were the pick of the bowlers for Delhi, taking two wickets each. Despite the strong batting display by Mumbai, it was Karun Nair’s explosive return to IPL action that stole the spotlight and gave Delhi a fighting chance in a high-pressure chase.
