The announcement has been made by the Delhi Capitals to appoint Faf du Plessis as their vice-captain for this season of the Indian Premier League. The confirmation of the development was done by the Capitals through their official handle on X. The announcement of du Plessis as vice-captain comes just days after Axar Patel was named captain of the team.
Du Plessis, the former captain of South Africa, carries a wealth of vast experience in the IPL, having played for the Chennai Super Kings and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He was let go by RCB after the 2024 season with the thought that he was getting on in age to deliver consistently. However, recognizing the value of his experience and skill set, the Delhi Capitals acquired him for INR 2 crores in last year’s auction.

Faf Du Plessis is expected to contribute well in the coming season as not only will he serve as an able vice-captain but also as a very competent batter. He has played 145 IPL matches, scoring 4571 runs at an average of 35.99 and a strike rate of 136.37 in 138 innings. Du Plessis is likely to pair with Jake Fraser-McGurk at the top of the batting order with an eye for a competent foundation for Delhi Capitals.
By being vice-captain, du Plessis will be under Axar Patel in the leadership group which is going to be also very rich as he will be bringing in experience and expertise he has for years of playing in the game. It is going to be a value addition as the captain and players in the team can approach him in situations that require high pressure.
Delhi Capitals has brought forth an enriched leadership group with the appointment of Faf du Plessis as vice-captain, and they have also created further depth in their batting arsenal. The team is keen to create an immediate impact in the upcoming season, and this should add weight to du Plessis’s experience and skills in getting that right.
