Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) endured a heartbreaking defeat against Delhi Capitals (DC) in their IPL 2025 season opener, losing by just one wicket in a thrilling last-over finish. Ashutosh Sharma’s explosive knock of 66* off 31 deliveries turned the game in DC’s favour, overshadowing LSG’s strong batting performance.
LSG, batting first, set a formidable target of 210 runs, courtesy of Mitchell Marsh (72) and Nicholas Pooran (75). While the duo dominated DC’s bowlers, LSG’s innings lost momentum toward the end.
Despite the loss, captain Rishabh Pant remained positive about the team’s performance, particularly highlighting the contributions of the top-order. He emphasized that their approach should focus on learning from each match and sticking to the basics.
“I think our top-order batters played really well, and it was a pretty good score on this wicket. As a team, we need to take positives from every match and improve in the future,” Pant remarked during the post-match presentation. He also pointed out that the team secured early breakthroughs but needed to execute the fundamentals more consistently.
Klusener Disagrees with Pant’s Assessment
LSG’s assistant coach, Lance Klusener, had a contrasting view on the defeat. The former South African all-rounder believed that the team fell short by 20-30 runs, which ultimately put pressure on their bowlers. “If I have to put a finger on it, I would say we left 20 or 30 runs out there. That was probably why we ended up under pressure with the ball,” Klusener explained.
He acknowledged DC’s strong finish with the bat but insisted that LSG’s total was insufficient given the conditions.
“I thought there was something in the wicket for both batters and bowlers, but we should have capitalized better. With the experience and batting firepower we have, I think we left a few runs out there this evening,” Klusener added. He also pointed out that the bowling unit struggled at times, making it even more crucial for the batters to provide a bigger cushion.
LSG’s Focus Shifts to Sunrisers Hyderabad
Despite the disappointing result, Klusener emphasized the importance of keeping the squad motivated. “We play again in three days, so we need to ensure our youngsters remain positive and believe in their abilities,” he said.
LSG will now shift their focus to their next game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, a team known for its high-scoring matches. With limited time to regroup, the team will look to address their shortcomings and bounce back strongly in Hyderabad on Thursday.
