Urvil Patel is an explosive wicketkeeper-batter from Gujarat who rose to fame during the 2024–25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Born in Mehsana, the 28 year old cricketer has consistently showcased his hard-hitting skills in domestic cricket. His performance in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy was exceptional, scoring 315 runs in six innings at an average of 78.75 and an impressive strike rate of nearly 230.
He made headlines when he smashed a 28 ball century against Tripura, which made him the joint-second-fastest player to score a T20 hundred. Urvil’s consistency with the bat saw him hit the most sixes (29) in the tournament, even surpassing Rajat Patidar. His success didn’t stop there, as he also scored his career-best 140 in the Ranji Trophy quarter-finals against Saurashtra, further proving his form across formats.
A Memorable IPL Debut for CSK
Urvil Patel made his Indian Premier League debut for Chennai Super Kings in the 2025 season against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens. The spotlight was initially on Ayush Mhatre, who had recently scored a brilliant 94. However, Mhatre was dismissed for a duck, making way for Urvil to step in. In a high-pressure chase of 180 runs, Urvil impressed instantly.
After playing a dot ball, he launched a powerful six over mid-wicket, followed by three more sixes and a four. He scored 31 runs off just 11 balls at a staggering strike rate of 281.82. Though it was his first IPL match, his confident batting style reflected his T20 experience. His aggressive intent and ability to handle pressure turned him into one of the standout performers of the match.
Journey to the IPL and Future Prospects
Before joining CSK, Urvil was part of Gujarat Titans in IPL 2023 but did not get a chance to play. He finally made his debut two years later for CSK, who signed him for Rs 30 lakh as a replacement after Vansh Bedi was ruled out of IPL 2025 due to injury. He was called for trials along with Mhatre after CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was sidelined.
Urvil has so far played 47 T20 matches, scoring 1162 runs, including two centuries and four fifties. With such powerful performances and growing recognition, Urvil Patel is quickly becoming one of the most promising talents in Indian cricket, particularly in the shortest format of the game.
