Karnataka’s young batting star R Smaran has received his first-ever call-up for the Indian Premier League (IPL) as he joins Sunrisers Hyderabad for the 2025 season. The 21-year-old left-handed batter replaces Australian spinner Adam Zampa, who has been ruled out due to injury.
Known for his elegant stroke play and calm presence at the crease, Smaran was a standout performer across domestic formats last season. His consistent form and match-winning efforts helped him rise quickly through Karnataka’s ranks.
A Stellar Domestic Season
Smaran first caught attention during his impressive run in the U-23 Col CK Nayudu Trophy, where he led Karnataka to their maiden title win. He made a smooth transition to the senior team and performed across all formats. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament, Smaran scored 170 runs at a striking strike rate of 170, playing a crucial role in the team’s success.
His performances continued in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he scored 433 runs in just seven innings, including two centuries and two fifties. He made a strong mark in the Ranji Trophy as well, collecting 516 runs in his debut season, which featured a double century against Punjab.
Humbled by Opportunity, Hungry to Learn
Smaran had gone unsold in last year’s IPL auction despite being in talks with teams like Lucknow Super Giants, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, and Delhi Capitals. More recently, Royal Challengers Bengaluru gave him a trial run in a practice match. Now, with his opportunity finally here, Smaran is both thrilled and grounded. “The call-up hasn’t sunk in yet,” he said, as he prepared to join the SRH camp in Mumbai ahead of their match against Mumbai Indians.
While he remains unsure about how many matches he might play, Smaran is eager to learn from the team’s experienced players and coaches. He is especially excited to interact with seasoned professionals like Heinrich Klaasen and team captain Pat Cummins. “I want to get into their heads and learn,” Smaran added, highlighting his focus on growth and learning over immediate success.
