Is ODI Cricket Dying? Empty Seats at India vs Bangladesh Game Spark Debate

India’s campaign in the Champions Trophy 2025 began with a surprising sight—empty stands at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Despite facing Bangladesh on Thursday, February 20, the stadium, which has a capacity of 25,000, was barely half-full. This rare occurrence sparked discussions among fans and cricket experts alike.

Bangladesh’s Disastrous Start

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and opted to bat first, a decision that backfired immediately. Soumya Sarkar (0 off 5) and Shanto himself were dismissed for ducks in the first two overs. India’s bowling attack, led by Mohammed Shami and Axar Patel, dominated early on, reducing Bangladesh to 35/5.

Empty Stands: A Shocking Sight

Indian matches are usually known for packed stadiums and electrifying atmospheres. However, this time, even the world’s most followed cricket team failed to attract a large crowd. The lack of attendance raised serious concerns about the future of ODI cricket.

The India-Bangladesh match wasn’t the only one with a low audience. The opening game between co-hosts Pakistan and New Zealand in Karachi also witnessed a similar situation. Former cricketers, including Michael Vaughan, criticized the ICC for poor scheduling and lack of promotion.

Debate Over ODI Cricket’s Relevance

Many fans and experts took to social media to question whether ODI cricket is losing its appeal. Former IPL President Lalit Modi also commented on the empty stands, suggesting that One-Day Internationals should be scrapped in favor of more Test cricket.

“Watching the @ICC Champions Trophy cricket match between #India and #Bangladesh. Stands are empty. That would not happen at an #IPL game. Is the One-Day format becoming irrelevant to the fans? What’s your view? Should one-day cricket be scrapped and more Test cricket?” — Lalit Modi on X

India’s Dominance on the Field

While the lack of spectators was a talking point, India remained focused on the game. Shami and Axar Patel ripped through Bangladesh’s batting order, with Patel almost securing a hat-trick. However, Rohit Sharma dropped a crucial catch at first slip, allowing Jaker Ali to survive.
