Shreyas Iyer has played a pivotal role in Punjab Kings’ journey to their first IPL final in 11 years. His 41-ball unbeaten 87 against the Mumbai Indians showcased his ability to thrive under pressure and lead from the front. With 603 runs in 16 innings at an average of 54.81 and a strike rate of nearly 176, Iyer has been a consistent force for the team.
This performance helped Punjab Kings eliminate the five-time champions and secure a spot in the final against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Despite the impressive win, Iyer remained grounded, stating, “It’s not yet finished. We have another match tomorrow. From that mindset, my approach was that my job is half done. I have to come back tomorrow.”
Strategic Leadership and Team Dynamics
Shreyas Iyer emphasised the importance of strategy and understanding match situations. He shared, “I love to play the situation as much as possible and not get too much ahead of the game. If I’m chasing, I see the required run rate and how the wicket is playing and which all bowlers are going to come.” His methodical approach and precise planning have allowed him to stay calm and guide his team effectively.
Moreover, he recognised the value of team support, saying, “I back myself, I back my instincts and I think that’s when I get the best out of myself. Also, when other players are involved around you and keep performing, that also gives you a little bit of extra push to keep going.” Iyer also lauded the contribution of young players who played fearlessly, making a significant difference in the team’s consistency throughout the season.
Influence of Ricky Ponting and Familiar Rivalry
Coach Ricky Ponting has been a key figure behind the scenes, providing strong guidance and equal treatment to all players. Iyer praised him, stating, “He is an amazing coach who manages the player precisely, and I personally feel that one thing that stands out with him is that he treats everyone equally.” This leadership style has boosted team morale and performance.
As Punjab Kings prepare to face RCB in the final, Iyer reflected on a familiar rivalry, comparing it to the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy final, where he had led Mumbai to victory over Madhya Pradesh. “Yes, I am getting the Mushtaq Ali feeling. When I met Rajat, I told him that the Mushtaq Ali (final) is getting repeated, we both are back in the final,” he said.
