“Jaiswal Aimed To Challenge Selectors”- Indian Legend After Match-Winning Ton

Former Indian cricket great Sunil Gavaskar commented on Yashasvi Jaiswal’s match-winning century in the third and final ODI against South Africa in Vizag. Jaiswal’s maiden ODI hundred helped India seal the series, and Gavaskar suggested that the young left-hander might have aimed to challenge the selectors, especially with Shubman Gill close to making a return.

Jaiswal, who got the opportunity after Gill suffered a neck spasm, had a slow start to the series with failures in the first two ODIs. However, he bounced back spectacularly with an unbeaten 116 off 121 balls, guiding India to a comfortable nine-wicket win while chasing 271 with 61 balls to spare.

Gavaskar Praises Jaiswal’s Smart Approach, Learning From Early Mistakes

On Star Sports, Sunil Gavaskar praised Jaiswal’s approach, highlighting how the opener had learned from earlier mistakes of attempting risky shots too soon in his innings. He remarked:

“Look he hadn’t scored a lot of runs in the previous two games. So, he thought when Shubman Gill is fit, he will return to that spot. Hence, Yashasvi Jaiswal wanted to create some difficulty for the selectors. It is also for his confidence. He understood the need to put away some shots which were creating difficulties for him.”

“There was also bounce on this surface and we saw from the outset when Marco Jansen bowled. Jaiswal showed patience by leaving balls outside off-stump and he played the hook shot well.”

Gavaskar further continued:

“In the previous match, he played the bouncer outside off-stump that went straight up. So, today he was coming inside the line and playing. He learned from the earlier mistakes. It is a very good indication of a player wanting to learn from his mistakes and score runs. He showed patience at the start by not hitting a lot of boundaries. After his half-century, Jaiswal started playing freely.”
