Jasprit Bumrah Opens Up On Skipping Captaincy Role

Jasprit Bumrah has finally spoken about why he declined the opportunity to lead the Indian cricket team in the upcoming Test series against England. Speaking in an interview with former India cricketer Dinesh Karthik on SKY Sports, Bumrah confirmed that he was indeed considered for the captaincy by the BCCI’s selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar.

However, due to concerns around his fitness and workload management, he chose to step aside, allowing Shubman Gill to take over as captain, with Rishabh Pant named as vice-captain.

“I Don’t Want to Be Looked At in a Leadership Role”

Bumrah revealed that before the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli during IPL 2025, he had proactive discussions with the BCCI and medical experts regarding his physical condition. “Before Rohit and Virat retired during the IPL, I had spoken to the BCCI about my workloads going forward in a five-test match series. I’ve spoken to the people who have managed my back. I’ve spoken to the surgeon as well, who’s always spoken to me about how smart you have to be about the workloads,” Bumrah explained.

Based on these medical consultations, the decision was made to manage his involvement in the demanding five-Test series carefully. “So then I called the BCCI and said I don’t want to be looked at in a leadership role because I won’t be able to give all the Test matches in a five-test match series,” he said.

Team Comes First, Says Bumrah

Despite the honor and responsibility of leading the national side, Bumrah prioritized the team’s stability and consistency. He admitted that it was a tough call, but it was necessary. “But then I had to say, no, that it’s not fair for the team as well, that, you know, a five-Test match series, three matches, somebody else is leading, two matches, somebody else is leading. It’s not fair to the team. And I always wanted to put the team first,” Bumrah said.

Given his recent injury struggles and the BCCI’s intent to rotate him through the series, Bumrah’s decision reflects a mature understanding of team dynamics and personal limitations. His absence from a leadership role might be a temporary pause, but it demonstrates his commitment to Indian cricket’s long-term interests.
