Jhye Richardson Out of BBL 2024-25 Due to Shoulder Injury

The Perth Scorchers have been dealt a significant blow as star Australian fast bowler Jhye Richardson has been ruled out of the remainder of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25. The 28-year-old pacer will also miss the rest of the summer season due to an ongoing shoulder problem. The Scorchers, who are strong contenders for the knockout stages, will have to continue their campaign without Richardson, who has been a key asset for the team in past seasons.

Upcoming Shoulder Surgery and Recovery Goals

Richardson is scheduled to undergo shoulder surgery this week, following consultations with Cricket Australia’s medical team and other specialists. The primary goal of this procedure is to ensure a full recovery and pave the way for his return to cricket. The bowler is targeting next summer as a comeback timeline, with a focus on being fit and ready for the Ashes series against England in 2025. This marks another chapter in Richardson’s battle with recurring shoulder issues, which have hindered his promising career.

History of Shoulder Injuries

This is not Richardson’s first battle with shoulder problems. Since first dislocating his right shoulder in March 2019, the fast bowler has undergone two surgeries to address the issue. More recently, in November 2024, he suffered a freak injury during a Sheffield Shield match while celebrating a wicket. Despite the setback, Richardson completed the game but now faces another extended period on the sidelines. His resilience and determination to recover fully reflect his commitment to representing Australia at the highest level once again.

Jhye Richardson has announced his decision to undergo shoulder surgery following thorough discussions with his medical team during the ongoing BBL 2024-25. The 28-year-old pacer acknowledged that surgery is the only viable option to improve the stability of his shoulder and minimize the risk of recurring injuries.

Richardson admitted that his persistent shoulder issues have impacted his on-field performance, particularly in his ability to contribute fully to his team. In a press release, he stated: “After careful consideration and many discussions with my medical team, I’ve decided to undergo shoulder surgery to improve stability and reduce the risk of future injury. Over the past few years, my shoulder has limited me in the field, and I know how important it is to fully back up my teammates.”

Although missing the remainder of the BBL 2024-25 with the Perth Scorchers is a tough decision, Richardson emphasized that it is the best course of action for a successful comeback. He added, “While it’s a difficult call, especially as it means I won’t finish the season with the Scorchers, this is the best option to set me up for a strong and healthy return to cricket.”

The timing of the surgery is critical, according to Richardson, as it will provide him ample opportunity to prepare for Shield cricket and the Ashes series in 2025. He is determined to give his all to the rehabilitation process, aiming to return in peak form. “The timing of the surgery is crucial to ensure I have the best possible build-up, including Shield cricket leading into next summer,” he explained. “I’ll be giving everything to the rehab process, determined to come back as the best version of myself. Thanks for all the support, and I can’t wait to return stronger for summer 2025/2026!”
