Kane Williamson Comments On Why WTC Format is Not Ideal

Kane Williamson, a Kiwi batsman and a modern day great has shared his thoughts on the World Test Championship (WTC) as a competition. Test cricket was finding it hard to gain attention of the fans, especially as people preferred watching shorter-form of cricket and that is where all the brand money also followed. Thus, ICC (International Cricket Council) introduced WTC, a major title for the test playing nations. Every two years, there’s one WTC winner and for the last two times, India has played the final and won none of it.

Talking to ESPNcricinfo, Williamson shared his thoughts on the WTC format.

Kane Williamson Believes WTC Format is Not Ideal, Here’s Why

Kane Williamson said, “The fact that it is different for each team, I think is not ideal. But look, anytime you get the opportunity to sort of review after a two year test championship window,, to try and tweak it a little bit. That’ fine. It’s still in its infancy, really, as a competition.”

William did say though that WTC as a format should stay. He loves test cricket, and so does many other modern greats such as Virat Kohli.

Williamson added, “I love test cricket and I would love to see it stay and I would love to see it be a pathway for young cricketers still, alongside the T20 format, whether that’s more in a franchise space.”

WTC as a Competition

WTC is one of the big efforts of ICC to keep the test cricket format interesting and alive globally. More and more teams would likely want to be a part of the WTC cycle which starts every two years. The current cycle will end with the finals played between June 11 to June 15, 2025. The finals will take place in Lord’s Cricket Stadium in London. The match is between South Africa and Australia.
