Delhi Capitals’ star batter KL Rahul is expected to miss the first two matches of IPL 2025 as he prepares to welcome his first child with his wife Athiya Shetty. The experienced cricketer, a key figure in India’s ODI and Test teams, recently announced the news following India’s Champions Trophy victory.
Alyssa Healy, Australian women’s team captain and wife of Mitchell Starc, hinted at Rahul’s absence during a discussion on LiSTNR Sport, mentioning that the Capitals would need to find a replacement for Harry Brook, who also withdrew from the tournament. Healy noted Rahul’s importance, especially his ability to anchor the innings in T20 matches, making him a crucial player for DC’s lineup.
Delhi Capitals’ Squad Adjustments
KL Rahul was acquired by Delhi Capitals for ₹12 crore in the IPL 2025 auction after being released by Lucknow Super Giants. Interestingly, Rishabh Pant, who had captained DC, moved to LSG for a record ₹27 crore. With their opening match scheduled against LSG on March 24 in Visakhapatnam, Rahul’s potential absence could be a major setback for the Capitals.
However, the team will rely on their younger players and recent signings to fill the gap. Among DC’s new acquisitions is Faf du Plessis, who previously led Royal Challengers Bengaluru for three seasons. His leadership experience could be valuable in Rahul’s absence.
Axar Patel Takes Over as Captain
After much speculation, Delhi Capitals confirmed Axar Patel as their captain for IPL 2025. Having been with the franchise since 2019, Axar’s appointment came amid talks that Rahul might take over the leadership role.
Meanwhile, Faf du Plessis has been named vice-captain, bringing his extensive experience to the team’s leadership group. With multiple key players unavailable at the start of the season, the Capitals will need to rely on their depth and adaptability to make a strong start in the tournament.
