Matheesha Pathirana Calls MS Dhoni His ‘Father Figure’

MS Dhoni possesses a unique quality to recognize cricketing talent and groom it. Players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma state that they reaped the fruits of Dhoni when they got into this profession and were guided by Dhoni during their early struggles. This ability of Dhoni has not only helped Indian cricketers but also helped international cricketers like Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana.

Pathirana was born into an entire family of musicians and saw little cricket exposure, but Dhoni trained his eye and took him to his IPL debut with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2022. Since then, Pathirana has played 31 times for Sri Lanka. Thus, he honed his skills, mentored by Dhoni.

Pathirana has only embarked on a career with the critical touch of Dhoni and is thus lasting proof of incredible leadership and talent-spotting ability. Pathirana too has his story in Dhoni’s successful list of careers as he becomes another domain in the number of cricketers whose careers have been formed by this man, both in India and outside.

Matheesha Pathirana’s Parents Thank Dhoni for Son’s Success

 

Pathirana’s parents, who even view the wicketkeeper as their father, discussed Dhoni’s influence on their son’s career in a video that CSK posted.

“No words for MS Dhoni. He is real God. How Matheesha respects his father. Like that, he respects Dhoni,” said Matheesha’s mother.

“In Sri Lanka, you are my father, in India it is MS Dhoni,” added his father.

“I treat MS Dhoni as my father figure because of what he has done for me in cricket. The support he has given me in cricket is very similar to what my father gave me at home,” said Matheesha.

With a top bowling figure of 4/28 and an economy rate of 7.88, Pathirana has taken 39 wickets in 22 games overall for CSK.
